The Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) is the statutory body set up in 1997 to investigate alleged miscarriages of justice in England Wales and Northern Ireland. The CCRC has the power to send a case back to an appeal court if it concludes that there is a real possibility that the court will overturn the conviction or cut the sentence. The CCRC is the only body with the power to do this. Since starting work in 1997 the CCRC has on average referred 33 cases a year for appeal. == Introduction == The Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC)〔http://www.justice.gov.uk/about/criminal-cases-review-commission CCRC〕 is the public body with statutory responsibility for investigating alleged miscarriages of justice in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. It was established by Section 8 of the Criminal Appeal Act 1995〔http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1995/35/contents Section 8 of the Criminal Appeal Act 1995〕 and started work investigating possible miscarriages of justice on 31 March 1997. The CCRC has the power to send, or refer, a case back to an appeal court if it considers that there is a real possibility the court will quash the conviction or reduce the sentence in that case.
